In this chart, I’ve drawn in; the Tortola sloop, old sailing ships, most all the bays - especially old favorites like, 'Throw Away Wife Bay' off of Great Camanoe Island (some names just make you wonder).  For the trade wind, I have drawn a misty Saint Ursula with a lamp for her virgin followers. I've included; reefs, shoals and drops; Pelicans, Magnificent Frigatebirds, game fish, sea turtles, a Nurse Shark, a Spotted Eagle Ray: and more sea life mixed in with my mythical mermaids and sea monsters; by repeating a style I created for my Thai chart - two side columns, allowing more depth for the artwork - while still playing within the boundaries of cartography.

While following the equator, I’ve grown attached to maps and charts.
Though the most useful ones are left-brain-engineered and not intended to be pretty.
I’ve created these charts for myself, a souvenir of sorts, of where I was living, creating, sailing and diving.

I enjoy the beauty of antique maps, however; I wanted these to be correct, showing the current names
and location of towns, villages, bays and reefs.

Creating in this old world style - using India ink and watercolor - is playtime for my imagination.
Every scrap of paper is embellished with local boats, old sailing ships, imagined mermaids, sea monsters
and island vignettes. To me, this combination of precision and imaginative doodling formed a synergy:
splicing the present with the past, allowing each place, each chart, to show its own character.

I had a few advantages over the cartographers of old and aimed for accuracy, but I cannot recommend
charting your course with a map covered with mermaids and sea monsters.

The archival Giclee print is available framed or unframed. Six size options, several paper options and you literally have thousands of combinations on the framing options. First click on my print shop at http://savanna.imagekind.com click on Galleries, then click on Charts.

You will see customize by the image you've clicked/selected, click customize, you now have 6 sizes options, I prefer the Large (or bigger) so I can read the bays easily. Don't go below the medium-size if you want to read the fine print like the names of bays, it's still there and sharp but it is very small. (I drew the original on 60" wide paper - so I like the large print sizes - closer to the way I see the original artwork in my head).

For the paper options; I like the Enhanced Matte - when I'm having to budget it.
And Somerset Velvet - when I'm doing a show (it's a heavier, thicker paper that looks great).
Both are nice, and both are archival. Just depends on the budget.

The framing offered here is very reasonably priced. I have not found a frames shop that beats it for custom work.  I have ordered all of my charts framed, with and without mats, both look good.  I usually have a border design, of some sort drawn on my charts, and that gives them a bit of space - without the mat. (again depends on the budget).

Shipping framed or unframed - is fast and reasonable via FedEx. You will have options of ground 3-5 days, 2nd day and overnight.
If you have any questions, or problems with this website navigation just let me know, I'm happy to help.
